On the religious man's Jesus...
To foreground all of this. Yes, I am a Christian. No, I’m not an idiot. And no, I’m not keen on long-winded theological debate. And above all, no, I’m not religious. I’ve heard countless times as an argument against Christianity, that religion is dangerous, or religion kills. Now the latter may be extreme, but the former is absolutely true. Jesus was one of the least...

A review of 'Come With It Black Man' by Gerard...
With Carnival season in full swing and the actual event around the corner, a final free screening of ‘Come With It Black Man’, Tamara Tam-Cruickshank’s short biography of the musical career and ‘consciousness’ of one of the legends of Calypso, Dr. Leroy Calliste, a.k.a The Black Stalin, will take place at Alice Yard on the night of January 31st. Having missed the premier (and most likely...

trinilikesalt replied to your photo: Maybe you’re the kind of person who likes film…. Free to see? Where? For those of us who cya make it to Woodbrook on Thursday, nah! Unfortunately this is the last free screening. In Trinidad, at least. Not sure what the distributor has planned in terms of screenings, but you can email them for a copy. All I do at the moment is the odd poster design.

Review: Come With It, Black Man
Last year, i cut a documentary film, based in Trinidad and Tobago. Yesterday, it was reviewed for the Trinidad Guardian, by B.C. Pires. …Tamara Tam-Cruickshank’s short film about Black Stalin, Come With It, Black Man is a complete success. In the industry phrase, she has “told her story.” Apart from a handful of perhaps overly picky criticisms, in only her second outing as a filmmaker...

On Black Jesus...
How has Christianity become a religion for white, middle class people, to minister to less fortunate, non-white heathens? Do people realize where Christianity originated? Or do they genuinely believe in the Caucasianing of Biblical representations as accurate? Black Jesus has become a punchline, but I feel as though, if people understood how much colour there is in the Bible, they would better...

Five lessons for my future children
The future sounds like a fun place. More flying things, less solid foods, and more Terminators. I’d like to think that Tumblr will be around in the future, having been bought by Walmart by then, and that my kids will glance at this wisdom that I leave them. 1. Walk briskly Much of my adult life has been spent sitting down, often for work, often for the pretense of it, and never for...

2012 Film Challenge Megapost
As I did last year, I’ve challenged myself to watch 200 films, for the first time, in 2012. This means no films that I’ve seen even a minute of before, and each film must be feature length. Now I know what you’re thinking - “Get a life!” - but films are part of my life. I spend hours waiting for video to be rendered, so I tend to apply it to something constructive....

“He’s behaving like a spoilt child. You ever have a child and if they don’t get to go out and play or go to the park, they stop, they don’t want to eat, they don’t want to have breakfast? On cultural film...
As anyone who follows this blog knows, I’ve been working on a film for quite some time now - Come With It, Black Man. The film is a documentary on the calypso and consciousness of Black Stalin, and you should check out the trailer, if you have a spare 1:48. Left to right: Editor, Director, Sound Editor I missed the first screening - a private event in September - as I was out of the...

The counting of our dead
“I have also instructed the police not to reveal any figures for murders and this is done so as to take away from the Opposition’s design to create mischief where none existed. It is wrong.” - Jack Warner What does this say of the Government’s view of the country? The statement comes off as though Trinidad and Tobago is the playground of Government and Opposition, with no consideration...

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any content on here. In that time I’ve managed to visit Tobago three times, get married, and fly a quarter-way around the world. I’ve also been pressing on with the final touches on the film, Come With It, Black Man, working with the rest of the post-production team toward the finish line. The promotional run-up is starting to gather...

The colour of our stories
Something bugs me about the way people tell stories these days. So many try to make race a relevant detail. Most commonly, I hear stories about a “dodgy-looking black guy”, or a “big scary black man” and I really do wonder why telling me he’s black gives a better picture of the situation. It’s never a “dodgy-looking tall guy” or a...

On a Man's country...
It’s thoroughly disgusting to see these things in genuine newspapers - not tabloids - in Trinidad and Tobago. The pathetic excuse we have for media, rooted in a complete disregard for integrity and plain taste. As sensitive as the article may be - judge for yourself - the headline disregards it all. Then again, what else can we expect from a country with products marketed like...

Third World Airlines
I’m getting married next month. Two of my friends, including a groomsman, were booked to come down for it on Caribbean Airlines, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic conspiring to be, like, super-expensive. Caribbean Airlines, of course, failed miserably. My friends were notified last week that the flight had been cancelled, and that they would either have to stay for an additional week,...

Sat down with the director - Tamara Tam-Cruickshank - to view the first cut of the Black Stalin documentary. Excitement really building now. The hope is that the film is finished by the end of July, but we won’t be compromising the quality to make a deadline. This isn’t a commercial venture. Tamara is really happy with the content, and the visual style is falling nicely into place....
